The Philippines is known to be a country with widespread poverty. It’s not uncommon to venture into the streets of Metro Manila and see on the streets children, the elderly, and the disabled begging for money. Some feel for the poor and give them streets children children, the elderly, and the disabled begging for money. Some feel for the poor and give them money, while some, paranoid that the poor might be part of a syndicate, choose to ignore those “in need” and walk away.
A viral video will have more people have second thoughts on giving alms to the poor. In a thirty-second video posted by one Deep X on YouTube, it shows a man with only one leg begging by the Ortigas MRT station.
After being prodded by the video-taker into answering where his “other leg” went, to everyone’s surprise, the man stood up with both limbs intact. The one-legged pants he’s wearing, apparently, is just a ruse and he’s been hiding his other leg all along.is just a ruse and he’s been hiding his other leg all along.
It’s no surprise that many people will pretend to be disabled while begging for alms. People sympathize more with the disabled as they have less capability of working compared to other poor people. However, it is highly encouraged to think twice and trust your instincts before giving money to a disabled person on the streets. Like the man on the video, you might be fooled.
